Crazy 8s

Time to play catch up . . . On 8/8/08 at 8:03 p.m. Robbie officially turned 8!  That is a lot of 8's!  Since he had such a unique 8th birthday, we decided to make it the day of 8.  We did/ate 8 things that Robbie loved:  Had waffles, went to the zoo, read books, had peanut butter & jelly, played video games, had Shepherd's Pie for dinner (he could have had anything, and that's what he picked!),  had chocolate cake and spent time with family.  It was a great day!  First up was the zoo: After the zoo we came home for rest time - which meant that the kids rested and Mommy attempted to make a birthday cake.  For years, I have refused to make my kids cakes.  I'm not a huge fan of boxed cake mixes, and I think the store bought ones are prettier and yummier.  But, I've kind of felt like a slacker mom for not making cakes for my kids, so I thought I would attempt it this year.  Do you know what I learned?  I may have some talents, but cake making is not among them.  Robbie wanted a Lego cake.  I thought, no problem.  I'll just make a 9x13 cake, cut it in half and stack the halves on each other.  Then I'll bake another thinner cake and cut out round circles to be the peg parts of the Lego.  I'll glue them on with frosting and slap some icing on the whole thing and voila!  It would be a work of art.  And it was . . . until the whole icing thing.  I only show this picture so that you understand my total ineptitude for cake making: And, that's the good side.  After a small *cough* nervous breakdown, Jon stopped and bought a different cake, although he refused to eat it.  He (as well as Randi and CJ) insisted that they eat my cake.  They even said it was good, although I think that may have been sheer self-preservation on their part.  Adam, however, refused to eat the Lego cake.  He said it looked funny.  Ah, the honesty of a 4-year old.  Robbie, my amazing 8-year-old, told me that he thought it looked cool and that he wanted to eat it.  I just love that boy!  What a great kid! So, Happy Birthday (last week) little buddy!  Thanks for putting up with your crazy Mom and loving me no matter what I do!  I'm so glad that you are part of our family!  I love you!
