It happens every 2 years. I just can't help it. I spend most of my free time glued to the television. Yes, it's the Olympics. Anyone who knows me well knows how much I love the Olympics. When I was a teenager, I would buy the TV guide for the Olympics and religiously follow everything. Now, I check the NBC Olympics website several times a day just to see who has won what and how many medals the US has won.
My poor husband is forced to watch womens gymnastics . . . and this year, even
men's gymnastics. I've apologized numerous times to him, and every time he sort of rolls his eyes and says "We do this every two years," in a longsuffering tone of voice.
It doesn't even matter what sport is on. It could be badmiton or fencing or the 1500M run - none of which I ever watch normally. But, slap a USA jersey on them, and I am riveted. I can tell you all sorts of useless facts about people and events. I got excited when the US men swept the 400 M hurdles. I can't even tell you how far 400 meters is. But, darn it, I was excited. I actually yelled and pumped my fist when the mens 4x100 freestyle medley swimming team came from behind and won the gold medal. Jason Lezak rocks!
There are a few things I don't understand: Laser Radial for instance. Does anyone actually know what that is? I didn't either. It's apparently some sort of sailing sport. I watched it, but it was really boring. Seriously.
And what is up with BMX racing at the Olympics? That's just weird. What's next, Olympic rollerblading?
And why are they getting rid of softball and baseball, and keeping things like trampoline? Does that make any sort of sense?
On the plus side, Jon and I finally found a sport that we could compete in at the Olympics. The 20 km walk. That's right . . . WALK. You mean, all I have to do is walk? Is there a specific form that we have to use? I think we're going to begin training right away. Step one: Go to the gym. Step two: Get on the treadmill. Step three: Walk. Whew, I'm exhausted just thinking about it.
So, bring it on. I'm sure there are a few of you (namely, my brothers) who are going to mock me. But, I love the Olympics. Go USA!
