Firsts

There are a lot of firsts you look forward to as a parent - rolling over, walking, talking, first lost tooth, first day of school. I had one today that I was not quite prepared for, and am not sure that I'm exactly happy about.

Robbie sent his first text message. What, you may ask, is the marvelous, earth changing thing that is the subject of your first text? Ice cream, as in "Can I have ice cream". That was followed by:

"Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" and "Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz" and "Boy this is boring" (We were sitting at Mom and Jamie's Honors Convocation - sorry guys! - and the kids were getting antsy. Hence, the reason we taught them to text.) He also got good use out of the emoticons.

Pretty soon Emily was in on the fun with "Hi dad, this is Emily. You are weird. And can you buy me ice cream?" and Ahhhhhhhh! Run everybody! It's an invasion of hugs and kisses! To:Mom From: Emily". I'm pretty sure they sent Uncle Brad a few texts too.

I am not ready for kids who text. I am envisioning myriads of random messages from the kids anytime they get hold of our phones. And that will probably be followed by requests for their own phones - which will not be happening! What did we do?!?

Oh my. That IS scary! I mean, it's cute that they can send messages, and the ones they sent were hilarious - it's the thought of them wanting their OWN cell phones and getting closer to teenagers that's hard!

Colin actually has casually asked for his own cell phone on and off for a year or two now, and he doesn't even know about texting! It's SO not going to happen yet . . .

This is a crazy first! I haven't even sent my first text message! Well, maybe that's just showing how out of the times I am :), but I'm not envisioning my kids getting to that first for a while (granted mine are younger than yours).
Good luck with them wanting their own

Aaah... I'm so proud!! :) sniff, sniff!! I wish I was there to see it!!

As for cell phones! I'm so getting my kids cell phones! I pay for them and they follow the rules! They break the rules and they lose them.

Part of the rules is that there is no privacy. Anything you do on that phone is fair game for me to see. Be wise.. what more can I say?

Oh, and disobedience also get's the GPS enabled and password protected... :)

Zander and Maddy figured out texting when they were four. Mostly gibberish and pictures, but now they are getting pretty good at it. They have text receivers that are like walkie talkies but they send and recieve texts. I was gonna get a set for my kids but Oscar said they had to wait until they were old enough for cell phones so until then they text from our phones.

A few weeks ago before Randy and I got married I was sitting in class, the girls were at my moms. I keep my phone on vibrate when I'm in class in case there is an emergency at my moms. Ten minutes into class me phone starts vibrating, I look at it see its from my mom and silence it. I send her a text saying "in class whats up". I was not expecting the response I got. It read, "I now mom wat are you doing" I sent one back saying "I will call when this class is over" and got one back saying "ok when will that be I want to go home now!" I spent the rest of my class time telling Madison that I couldn't leave right away because she is bored that she had to wait until I could pick her up. I never taught her how to text. I never showed her how to find text messaging on my phone and yet she knew exactly what to do and how to do it.
