Visiting Teaching

Several months ago, I was released from Nursery and given a new calling.  When Jon issued the call to me to be the Visiting Teaching Coordinator, I have to admit that I wasn't totally thrilled.  I don't really like to call people on the phone, and now I had to call a whole bunch every month?  If you call me, I'll talk your ear off, but I am NOT good about picking up the phone and calling other people.  But I gritted my teeth and just started doing it.  And do you know what I've discovered?  I really like it.  I get to organize things, which I'm pretty good at.  I get to make things more efficient.  But, the thing I've enjoyed the most is the one thing I thought I would hate.  I love talking to the sisters.  And the sisters I love talking to the most are the older sisters in our ward.  We have a unique ward in that we have lots of young families and quite a few older couples.  We have very few of the middle people - the ones with teenagers.  That kind of creates a natural division.  One of my favorite sisters is Sister Chaney.  She is 78 years old and a firecracker.  She has a hard time getting out to visit people, so she has a phone route.  We handed her a new route on Sunday, and she called to report today that she had already called all her sisters.  I just love talking to her.  I just got off the phone with her and realized I was smiling!  Because of my new calling, I am getting to know all these sisters that I never knew, and I love it.  I've decided my new goal is to meet all the older sisters in our ward, because they are just awesome!
