Neurotic

So, remember my last post about the swine flu? On Wednesday night, the Fort Worth School District (right next to us), closed all campuses until May 11th because they have several confirmed cases. I even saw my first person wearing a mask yesterday at Sam's Club. Yeah, I kinda freaked out. To this point, I have:

*Grocery shopped - I stocked up on things, ya know, just in case. I bought things I didn't even need. I now have 9 boxes of Mac & Cheese, 6 gallons of milk, 10 loaves of bread . . .

*Bought more hand sanitizer. (Most stores are actually out - I had to go to 4 stores to find any, and that was just a few small bottles)

*Bought my kids gummy vitamin C - which they must take every morning along with their regular vitamin C.

*Bought more antibacterial wipes (I'm totally addicted to these anyway - I didn't want to run out if there was a shortage!)

*Sent my kids hand sanitizer to school.

*Made Jon go to the doctor since he's been sick to be tested for Swine Flu - which he DOES NOT have!

*Called CJ (my bro-in-law who's a doctor) to see if he could get me masks - just in case we need them. (He couldn't because he just finished his rotations- but I decided that's okay because I'd feel stupid wearing them anyway.)

I compulsively wipe down things with my antibacterial wipes. I make everyone use hand sanitizer any time we go somewhere other than our house. I check the internet a million times a day to make sure our school district is still okay.

The long and short of it is that I am neurotic. And I feel really stupid. Because if you actually talk to anyone in the medical field, they will all tell you this isn't that big of a deal. Only 1% of the population will be adversely affected if they even get the swine flu. But, I had to make sure my little family was taken care of. And now that I've done all that, I feel totally fine. I'm not even worried. Weird.

On another note, I told Jon that I feel like we're living in the last days before the Savior comes again. Jon looked at me like I was crazy and said, "We ARE living in the last days." To which I looked at him and said, "I know, but this is the first time I FEEL like we're living in the last days." It's just been an interesting feel to go out and see people buying entire carts of wipes or to see the hand sanitizer aisles crammed with people.

Anyway, happy Friday and may you have a pig free weekend!

After hearing from you on Wednesday evening that the Fort Worth school district had canceled school, I did freak out a little bit - because I didn't feel prepared. Once I had gotten some food in the house (and yes, some antibacterial soap), I felt a LOT better. Come what may, I've done what I can - and I think that's the key to peace of mind (that and faith)!

After talking to Randy Quinn, I feel a lot LOT better. He told me what I'd already heard, which was that the regular flu is far more deadly, but people don't take that seriously. Of course, now I'll probably be more likely to take family to the doctor when they have flu, now that I know how many people it kills a year!!!

I'm just sad that my kiddos don't get to go to school :(. Well, I'm really concerned about how they are planning on making up all these swine flu days... not looking fun to me.
I guess I'm not a huge worryier, but I was surprised that they closed the entire school district! That made me think more. I have yet to leave the house, but I plan on going shopping sometime... not sure when, but we are getting low on normal food items. You are a cute neurotic anyway :). I agree about feeling like we are in the last days. There are little things like this that keep us in remembrance (we had a water issue in phx before we moved, that was interesting too).

Well... I'm not concerned. The 'real' flu has killed thousands more this year then the swine flu. So far there are 331 cases of swine flu world wide. Only 10 deaths in the world so far. You were probably putting your family at more risk by taking them to the store in your car.... ;)

Hey we should get together for when crazy stuff happens. I can contribute all sorts of crazy foods with my beans and you can provide all the germ free necessities! We would make quite the team. :)

When I worked in the E. R. years ago, Dr. Sotman, a Dr. thzt specializes in Infectious diseases told me that there are approximately 13,000 deaths a year in the U. S. from the regular flu, but most people don't know that! It's when they give it a name like "Hong Kong Flu Asian Flu etc." that people freak out. I'm not one that freaks out either, but sure enough, they named this one, and when my new son-in-law was sent home with a fever and vomiting, I totally freaked. I had Kariann on the phone every hour, trying to get updates. I even made her get a surgical mask from the vet's office when they were picking up Shannon's dog that got poisoned, for him to wear so he wouldn't expose others while they were in the waiting room. Luckily enough, it wasn't Swines, just a regular old virus

You make me smile, and I love you dearly. It's nice to know that Jon and the babies are so well taken care of, even if mom is a little hyper-vigilant....
